Permanent Chef recruitment

As we move through August, with early Autumn September in Scotland a little over three weeks away, there are still lots of ASAP relief jobs on our books.

Permanent recruitment has fallen away post lockdown and this is something that we are looking to rectify.

Historically, Chefs In Scotland (CIS) placed lots of permanent chefs in positions across the length and breadth of Scotland and sometimes further afield.

Going back to when we had the offices on Wentworth Street in Portree there were maps of Scotland full of red pins to signify where the permanent jobs were that we were trying to fill. And we did fill plenty.

It was not unusual to send out 60 plus CVS for applications in a week, and sometimes over 100. We would often place 2, maybe 3 and sometimes up to 6 or more chefs in permanent positions in any given week. Permanent recruitment can be a little demoralising at times as a lot can go wrong.

No shows, runners or often just chefs looking to leave as the agreements put in place have not been honoured.

There were always the good permanent placements though, those satisfying ones where the chef stayed happily in the position for many years and obviously enjoyed their work.

This is something, over the coming months, which we will try to move back towards, to the times when we had a good list of Head Chef positions at all major cities in Scotland and were placing suitable chefs in these positions.

Relief work is a much needed part of the business and is the most lucrative, but over the coming months and into 2024 we are going to push to get back to more permanent placements and relishing the challenge.

Out and About 7th July

we currently have 94 relief chefs out working over Scotland and England

The availability of chefs is still tight as you would expect for the time of year.

If you are looking for work, please email over your CV to either ruth@chefsinscotland.co.uk or jojo@chefsinscotland.co.uk

Prices

16th April 2023

Chefs In Scotland has been offering the same 3 services since 2001 which is when our first website went live, 3 years after starting out on the journey of self-employment.
We had placed our first relief chef a year earlier in 2000, up to Tongue Hotel. We didn’t charge for that first one.
By the end of the year 2000 we were charging £50 plus VAT per week for a temp placement, up to a maximum of 6 weeks. The early rates for temp chefs were £8 to £8.50 per hour which was quite a lot back then.
Not a huge amount has changed since, we offer adverts on the CIS website, where candidates can apply directly to the jobs.
We also can try to source chefs for you if the job is doable.
For All New Relief jobs registered from tomorrow, Monday the 17th of April, the rates payable directly to the Relief Chef are going up until the end of October 2023.
Rates are £18 for Chef de partie
£20 for Sous Chef
And £22 for Head Chef.
The rate that CIS charges is also going up for new jobs registered from tomorrow, Monday the 17th of April. We will charge £70 plus VAT per week to a maximum of 10 weeks.
The price of adverts and permanent placements will remain the same for now.
Lowland Brewing, which is mostly owned by CIS, did it’s last brew yesterday, a new one called “Lockerbie 80”
It will be wound down and it’s last day of trading will be the 30th of June 2023.
Cheers
Michael
